I got a $15 haircut the other day and paid with a $20 bill to get back $1 bills as change. One of the bills had this message "Track this bill at www.WheresGeorge.com" message stamped on it in red ink. (below is an example, though the bill I received had different markings)
I obviously had to look up the website and see what this "Currency Tracking Project" was all about. WheresGeorge, named after George Washington, the first President of the USA, whose face features on all dollar bills is an experiment in Tracking currency notes as they circulate around the country and the world. Obviously the success of such an experiment depends entirely on public participation.
According to the website itself "Where's George? was not created to make money or collect email addresses or anything like that. It was created to simply allow people to track their currency as it circulates around the country and the world. The funds generated from the banner ads and the Friends program go to help pay for the hardware, software, and bandwidth it takes to keep the site running. The point is to have fun tracking your dollar bills and interacting with thousands of other fun and interesting people here at Where's George? Please join in the fun!"
So I logged in to the website and found out that this bill was first tracked in Seattle, WA three years ago.. check this out

My name is ~Angel Eyes~ I am a Georger & have been for a couple of years now it is such a blast. If U have found the idea of this hobby at all interesting U may want to check out R 4M's & then maybe attend a "Gathering" I know that there R quite a few Georges in the San Fran Area. I myself live in Madera.CA part of the Central Valley.
One of the reasons I chose to comment is bcuz b4 living in Madera I lived in Kent, WA which is part of the Seattle area & the bill U linked to belongs to one of my Georger Buddies. I was so shocked & surpized to to c a bill from someone I know.
I hope U decide to look into Georgeing Further but fair warning it can become very addictive.
